When Is the Right Time to Euthanize a Pet?
It’s never an easy decision to say goodbye to a beloved companion. Knowing you’ve made the best decision possible can take some of the unease of the decision to decide if it’s the right time to euthanize a pet.
Pets tend to live in the moment, and don’t reflect on their previous appearance or abilities, so if your pet is still mostly happy, we tend to say it has a pretty good quality of life, a daily measure for failing pets.
We apply two measures to help owners determine if it’s time to say goodbye:
- The Rule of Five: Think of the five things your pet most loves to do. When he can’t do three of them anymore, his quality of life may have declined so much that it’s time to think about euthanasia.
- The 5 Hs and 2 Ms: The seven things that impact a pet’s life include Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility and More Good Days Than Bad.
Aspen Grove’s Dr. Bobby Cawthron explains each measure of the important detail in our latest video.
