Winter Months Pet Care

Regardless if your pet would rather be jumping in the snow or snuggled up under a cozy blanket, pet owners need to prepare pet protection for winter months. This is a time when our beloved pets need a little extra care.

Happiest Indoors

Regardless where your pet want to spend the most time, keeping pets indoor during the winter months is a smart move for your pet’s health and body temperature. If you have to keep your pet outdoors, provide a warm, dry and draft-free shelter outside. Your pet will thank you!

Frostbite

The sweaters and vests at pet stores are not just to make your pet look super cute. They also to keep them warm during the winter. After long stays outdoors, be alert for signs for frostbite such as firm, waxy skin and blisters.

Don’t Overfeed

Pets need another layer of clothing, not another layer of fat. Cold temperature creates laziness in both owners and pets. Pay attention to your pet’s level of activity and adjust the calorie intake accordingly.

Sun Will Come Out

During the day, the best times to take your pet walking are late morning or early afternoon hours. Spend time playing outdoors in the sun with your pets before the cold nights hit.

The Deadly Drink

Wintertime brings antifreeze spills. Pets are attracted to this drink, but can it be fatal. If your pet starts acting “drunk” or begins to convulse, take him or her to the vet immediately. Keep your pets out of your garage and clean up any spillage, also be on the look out for neighbors’ driveways that could contain this deadly temptation .

Joy Rides

Cars produce a heat that can be attractive to most pets during the cold, winter months. Tap your car’s hood before starting your car to wake up any animals curled up under the hood seeking warmth.

Rule of thumb: If you are cold, most likely your pet is cold, too. Snuggle up, keep your pet warm and safe this winter season.
